“Steven Walker pulls a 180 with his newest body of work, “Night Shift”

Steven S. Walker has made a living painting luminous landscapes that often center around bold lighting. In this new body of work, Steven has shifted his focus to nocturnes and man-made lights of cities. Walker states, “It’s not just about switching to a dark palette but to highlight both the subtleties and vibrancy of the night. There‘s something beautifully mysterious about the night if you’re willing to embrace it.” Walker’s nocturnal scenes focus on the emotion and energy of nightlife whether it’s streaks from head lights passing through a green traffic light or the solitude of the “urban tree,” also known as a street light. “The specifics of a scene are not as important as evoking a mood or a sense of familiarity.”

“I am sure that it seems like a big departure from my traditional landscapes, but I view it as just an extension of my fascination with light,” says Walker. He expresses that this is a direction he feels is necessary for his growth as a person and an artist. His night-inspired works come from a darker side stemming from some close family issues. “Painting them is therapeutic for me...they help me to remember that there is light even in the darkest dark.”
