Steven Walker presents a show for our times… ten years in the making!
Reception on the 6th from 6-8 PM
Ten years ago Steven Walker began working on a project that delved into his love of music. He brought to life fabled women of song like Mustang Sally and Brandy while combining their imagined likeness with cityscapes and still lifes montaged into one image. The compositions were not unlike the aesthetic of classic movie posters by Drew Struzan but with much more ingenuity in weaving the parts together. Steven worked this series on and off for ten years; seven before he even showed Glave Kocen Gallery what he was up to. Under the pen name, “George Mallory” Steven created a 36”x36” painting called, “Judy” based on the one hit wonder by John Fred and his Playboys, “Judy in Disguise with Glasses.” The piece sold before it hit the wall and was the ONLY work in this series where he used the pen name. More works were created in 2017 and sold well that December at the Miami Art Fair which signaled to Glave Kocen and Steven this series is meant to be created and exhibited. From that day to this Steven has still included the music impetus but it is much more in the background. Walker expanded his work to include the collaboration of about a dozen models which shifted the focus and meaning behind his works.
The idea of the potential within each one of us resonated with Steven. He became very inspired by the models (chosen purposefully to represent a wide range of diversity) whose glowing cityscapes are representing their inner light harnessed to its fullest potential. In the wake of so many people saddened by a divided nation, these paintings will remind the viewer that we have the power within us all to live our best life and be a beacon for each other.
Steven has traditionally won his audiences over in more recent times with his night time cityscapes and before that a highly successful long run with his landscapes which he still enjoys painting to this day. Recognized twice in 2018 with the Award of Excellence by the The Oil Painters of America this new direction has been shown in a limited way up until now. At least 30 new works from, “Within” will be on display from April 5th-27th. For more info or images please don’t hesitate to contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
