hung juried March 1 - March 30, 2019 Opening Reception, Friday, March 1st 6:00 until 8:00
Hung Juried Glave Kocen Gallery’s first open call is a knockout and a pledge of support.
Hung Juried Exhibition
(GK’s first ever juried exhibit featuring 50+ Artists)
Opening reception on March 1st from 6-8 PM
51 Artists that have never shown at the Glave Kocen Gallery will be on display through the month of March. With close to 200 applicants and a wide range of disciplines and media, it was a daunting task to make sure the exhibit had cohesion but there is not one single piece that isn’t considered incredible by the Jurors and owners of Glave Kocen Jennifer Glave & BJ Kocen. “Our choice was to either have a massive exhibit or really drill down to what we considered the show stoppers.” States BJ Kocen “We were up til 1 AM going over the entries. Jenn’s phone even sounded the alarm; this is the longest you’ve been on your feet!” Jennifer laughs it off a little bit as, “Yeah BJ is the nite owl! I was getting pretty loopy but when we woke up in the morning and looked at what we chose we were sure we had just put together a really exciting one. We couldn’t have been more touched by the amount of quality submissions.”
Many artists that are included in the exhibit are local or Virginians but entries were received and accepted from North Carolina, New York, Ohio, & Maryland as well. Jennifer Kahn Barlow’s Macaroon Series (Oil on Canvas) makes the viewer pine for Paris….or a bite! Joseph Ring’s “Wild Ride in Havana” (Digital Photography) is just that; a thrilling photo featuring the classic cars of Havana. Keiko Genka’s Night and Day Acrylic paintings of the streets of Japan were so potent GK couldn’t just pick one so they are hanging both!
So many incredible artists that have not shown at Glave Kocen or in Richmond before are showing alongside some local luminaries that also are first time exhibitors with Glave Kocen like Blythe King, Jo Kennedy & Nils Westergard. Hung Juried is truly projected to be the surprise hit of the season. With so much quality work in a myriad of styles there will truly be something for everyone even for people with frugal budgets as price points run the gamut.
Hung Juried is also in part celebrating Glave Kocen’s new consulting focus where energy is being applied to bolstering artist’s business acumen and general support for their art career. Jennifer & BJ recently sold out their seminar, “How to Pitch a Gallery and Stay There.” It was revelatory that Glave Kocen’s experience could really help artists who have been frustrated by the art market or gallery relations. Jennifer & BJ started offering private consult sessions as well which a good number of artists have signed up for. Launching this Juried Exhibit was an opportunity to not only receive excellent work but BJ has been offering submission reviews for artists that did not get accepted to increase their chances for next time. “This has been so rewarding” Kocen begins, “I really feel like I’m making a difference when I usually just feel like a schmuck. I guess what we experience everyday has really turned into expertise. I can tell when an artist walks in the door and wants to pitch their work to us and usually after 30 seconds they’ve already blown it. I want to see less and less of that. I really want all artists to succeed and not just the ones we represent.”
Speaking to that end, at the opening reception of “Hung Juried”, one artist will be rewarded an exhibit and full representation of the gallery. Jennifer & BJ are waiting to receive all the work before they make their decision and it will be a tough one!
